U.S. Hwy. 78 and Gaston Rd., Aiken

Front inscription

The turn-of-the-century barn to the south is a notable example of eclectic Victorian, brick, U-shaped barn design and construction. It has a rare working early 20th century carriage lift. In 1909, David W. Gaston, Sr. (1860-1931) acquired the barn and surrounding farmland from the local Steadman family and opened a livery business here with his son, David W. Gaston, Jr. (1880-1932).

Reverse inscription

Gaston’s livery provided important transportation and recreation services to local residents and members of Aiken’s “Winter Colony.” The business rented and boarded horses for use around town and performaned maintenance on horse-drawn vehicles. It closed in 1932. The barn continued to be used as part of a working farm for several more decades.
