Galphin's Fort
Old Jackson Hwy. and Silver Bluff Rd., Jackson
Front inscription
Galphin’s Fort was a stockaded colonial-era outpost at nearby Silver Bluff. The fort was built at the home and trading post of George Galphin, an Irish-born trader and interpreter who lived at the site by the mid-18th century. An important intermediary between the colonial S.C. government and the Creek Indians, Galphin hosted tribal leaders and others at the site, which was fortified c.1760.
Fort Dreadnought
During the American Revolution, Galphin supported independence and worked to ensure Creek neutrality. British troops eventually seized the fort, naming it Fort Dreadnought and using it to store supplies. In May 1781, Patriot soldiers led by Capt. Michael Rudulph recaptured the fort from Loyalist militia. The brief engagement preceded the successful Patriot siege of nearby Augusta.
