Quintyne Plantation
Intersection of Clements Ferry Rd. and Sweet Pl., Charleston vicinity
Front inscription
Richard Quintyne (d.1695) established a plantation near here and a creek .5 miles east in the 1680s. Likely born in England, Quintyne was a prominent planter in Barbados and one of many early Carolina colonists who moved here from the island. He arrived 1679 on the ship Plantation with indentured servant James Mahone and probably a number of enslaved Africans who later worked this land.
Reverse inscription
Richard Quintyne lived here with his wife Elizabeth, five children, and an unknown number of enslaved people. The property was later owned by his son Henry who was killed in 1716 during the Yamasee War (1715-17). Also near here was the Wading Place, where by 1709 a bridge owned by Col. Robert Daniell, Jr., connected this west bank of the creek to what was later known as Daniel Island.
