After an artillery barrage on Union positions, regiments from Ga. and La. advanced through thick woods toward the plantation that afternoon.
Reverse inscription
Covered by gunboat fire from the river, Union regiments from Pa. and N.Y. met the Confederates in this area and repulsed the attack. More than sixty Confederate and sixteen Union casualties resulted. The engagement preceded the Battle of Secessionville on June 16, when Confederate soliders rebuffed a Union attack and forced their evacuation from James Island.
