Four Holes Public School
1125 Ridge Rd., Ridgeville vicinity
Front inscription
Around 1964 a segregated 3-room concrete block school was built here for Native American children of the Four Holes community. It served about 80 pupils in grades 1-8 and was part of Dorchetser Co. School District No. 3. In 1969 district officials blocked Four Holes parents from transferring their children to historically white Ridgeville Elementary, citing overcrowding.
Four Holes Freedom School
In response, Native parents and Black activists in the NAACP and SCLC led a protest and boycott of Four Holes School. Native children then attended a freedom school kept in a rented white and blue house about one mile away. White students from the Univ. of S.C. and elsewhere taught classes. The boycott ended in 1970 when Four Holes School closed and Native students enrolled at Ridgeville.
