Green Sea
Green Sea Rd. and Mitchell Sea Rd., Green Sea
Front inscription
This section of northern Horry Co. was known as Green Sea by the mid-1800s. The area’s name likely refers to the Green Sea Bay landform (4 mi. E). Green Sea was one of eleven Horry Co. townships created c.1868. The heart of the area was a nearby intersection where a meeting house and mill were located c.1820. By the 1850s it was called Blanton’s Crossroads after a post office.
Reverse inscription
The crossroads community went by several names until finally sharing “Green Sea” with the larger township. Tobacco farming became the primary industry in the early 1900s. Around 1940, 4,270 people lived in the 64.7-square mile township, and 190 in the crossroads area. The latter included a church, post office, two general stores, two white schools, and a Black school further south.
