Site of Old Brick Warehouse

231 N. Main St., Mullins

Front inscription

At this site in 1907, local farmers D.K. McDuffie and H.B. Harrington opened what was at that time the only brick tobacco warehouse in Mullins. It became a major hub for the Mullins tobacco market, the largest in South Carolina for much of the early 20th century. By the late 1920s it was referred to as the Old Brick Warehouse. The facility was expanded numerous times and eventually occupied most of this block.

Reverse inscription

Each season, area farmers brought their crop to the Old Brick and other local warehouses for auction. The site originally had wooden sheds for sellers and buyers to keep horses, while later renovations added drive-in bays for automotive loading. A longtime Mullins landmark, the Old Brick also hosted antique shows, dances, and talks by S.C. governors and other public figures. Sales stopped in 2001, and the Old Brick was razed in 2014.
